This lesson was created around the plural nouns section in Crossroads 8B.
Introduce students to plural nouns and the rules (add "s", add "es", change "f" to "ves", change "y" to "ies", exeptions)
Distribute worksheet (see below). Go around and check student work. As you're talking to each student, assign him a noun that he will place in a category when the worksheet is taken up (that way even the weaker students can participate).
Take up the worksheet and write the answers on the board in the correct categories.
Game: Battle
Each student gets 8 different cards
With her deck of cards face-down in her hand she "battles" with a partner. Each partner turns up one card.
She says the pictures in singular and plural (child/children, sarf/scarves). If she gets both right she wins the two cards. If she makes a mistake her partner wins the cards. Next it's the partner's turn.
Keep "battling" until they get through their deck.
Switch partners and "battle" through the deck again.
Keep going for 10 minutes. The student with the most cards in their deck wins a prize.
1. Read a text and have the students make notes by writing down key words.
2. Have the students re-build the paragraph based on their notes.
3. This will help the teacher see what grammar they missed.
Irregular Verbs
The verb list and categorization is from English Grammar in Use.
I taught this grammar unit with a grade 8 class by highlighting one group each week over a two-month period with a test at the end. Each week I would teach the lesson, and the students would do the worksheets. The key part of each worksheet is that on the back I expected them to write one paragraph in the past simple using at least three of the irregular verbs from that week. I didn't include the grading rubric on each sheet here, because it makes the document twice as long. They submitted their worksheets for weekly grading.
